Gases in the atmosphere
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a slightly toxic, odorless, colorless gas with a slightly pungent, acid taste. Carbon dioxide is released into our atmosphere when carbon-containing fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal are burned in air. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere climbed to a record 381 parts per million last year, an increase sure to spark further debate on global warming.
CO2 Gas and Liquid Carbon Dioxide
CO2 gas is 1.5 times as heavy as air, thus if released to the air it will concentrate at low elevations. Carbon dioxide in solid and in liquid form is used for refrigeration and cooling. Time and again, some people claim that human activities are only a minor source of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) which is swamped by natural sources.
The CO2 Calculator
The CO2 calculator is based on the ChoCO2 studies of GEIC, which calculate CO2 emissions from everyday Japanese electrical appliances and automobiles based on energy consumption figures. The full study on which the calculations are based is available on the GEIC Homepage.
